Deep in the sea lived a clam without glee, he was all by himself, and very lonely.

He had a pearl that he held dear, and the tip of his tongue was the home of this sphere.

If he opened his mouth just once to speak, the pearl would slip out and be gone in a streak.

So night after night the clam sat alone, without so much as a whisper, a whimper, a moan.

All the sea folk thought the clam was a snob; he refused to say hi to every Jim, Tom, and Bob.

It was only the mermaid who saw the sad in his eye, and thought perhaps the clam was just shy.

She made it her mission to stop on her way, and talk to the clam nearly every day.

Sometimes she brought stories of humor and light, and sometimes she’d just sit with him all through the night.

It mattered not to the clam in the sea, for he had a friend, and it made his heart free.

One day when the mermaid had stopped for a spell, the clam knew it was time; it was his turn to tell.
Her friendship meant more than the pearl he held dear, and so he let go, and his conscience was clear.

He told the mermaid how much she had meant, and how his heart soared with the time that she spent.

He was able to talk, and to laugh, and to play, and return the friendship he had been offered that day.

When the mermaid saw the sad in his eye, and gave him a chance without asking why.

And the pearl had slipped out, it had gone in streak, but it was long forgotten by the clam who could speak.

For friendship meant more than the riches held near, it was the one thing he could truly hold dear.

This short story recommended by a friend, not knowing that I have read other
works by same author, her proofs for first novel superb. She is young, fresh,
and vibrant. What we need more of now. RW
